Buddleja davidii, commonly known as 'sommerfuglbusk' (butterfly bush) in Danish, is a fast-growing deciduous shrub renowned for its fragrant flower spikes that intensely attract butterflies and other pollinators. Its blooms, varying in color from white to deep lilac or purple, appear from mid-summer to autumn, creating a vibrant spectacle. Care tips
For optimal flowering, place Buddleja davidii in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) and ensure the soil has good drainage, although it tolerates a wide range of soil types. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in its first year, to establish a strong root system; once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. Annual pruning in early spring is crucial: cut back old branches to about 30-60 cm (1-2 feet) from the ground to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering. A common mistake is not pruning it enough, which results in a leggy plant with fewer blooms.
