About Armeria pungens
Armeria pungens, commonly known as Spiny Thrift, is a small perennial plant that forms dense clumps of rigid, linear leaves with sharp tips. Its flower stalks rise above the foliage, culminating in globular inflorescences of pink or white flowers, resembling pompoms. It is ideal for rock gardens, coastal gardens, or as ground cover in poor, sunny soils, providing interesting texture and long-lasting blooms.
Native range
Southwestern Europe, mainly the Iberian Peninsula and southern France.
Care tips
This species thrives in full sun in well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky types, as it does not tolerate waterlogging. Watering should be sparse, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and it is very drought-tolerant once established. Avoid excessive soil moisture, which is its main enemy and can lead to root rot. It does not require regular fertilization and benefits from deadheading spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
