Care, watering, light and tips for Rat tail cactus on Floravia.
Disocactus phyllanthoides, commonly known as Nopalillo or Orchid Cactus, is an epiphytic cactus with flat, trailing stems that produce large, showy flowers in shades of pink and red. Its leaf-like stems make it ideal for hanging baskets or decorating high shelves, where its cascade of blooms can be admired. It's an exceptional plant to add an exotic and colorful touch to any indoor space or protected garden.
Central and Southern Mexico
It prefers bright, indirect light; intense direct sunlight can scorch its stems. Water thoroughly when the substrate is dry to the touch, but ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, especially in winter. Use a well-draining and airy substrate, ideally an orchid or epiphytic cactus mix with perlite and bark. The most common mistake to avoid is overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
