Dagger cactus

Quick facts

About Dagger cactus

Stenocereus griseus, commonly known as the May pitaya, is a branched columnar cactus native to Venezuela and Colombia. Its greenish-gray stems, covered with short spines, can reach considerable heights, creating a sculptural presence in desert gardens or as a striking specimen in large pots. It produces edible red fruits, valued for their sweet and refreshing taste.

Native range

Northern South America (Venezuela and Colombia), Dutch Antilles, and Caribbean islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao).

Care tips

It requires full sun for optimal growth and abundant flowering. Watering should be moderate during the growing season (spring-summer), allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and very scarce or none in winter. Use a very well-drained substrate, specific for cacti. The most common mistake to avoid is overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

First aid
Remove plant, inspect roots. Cut soft parts with clean knife. Let dry for 2-3 days.
What kills it
Overwatering and non-draining soil cause rapid, fatal rot.
