About Illyrian thistle
Onopordum illyricum, commonly known as Illyrian Thistle, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial native to the Mediterranean region. It is characterized by its large rosettes of spiny, silvery-grey leaves and robust, branching stems that can reach up to 2 meters in height, topped with purple thistle-like flowers. This is a spectacular architectural plant that adds a dramatic touch to naturalistic gardens, xeriscapes, or sunny borders.

Care tips
Onopordum illyricum thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, even poor or rocky ones. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established, so watering should be sparse and only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot; a common mistake is treating it like a plant that needs constant moisture. It does not require fertilization, and to encourage self-seeding (if desired) or maintain a tidy appearance, spent flowers can be removed.
