Care, watering, light and tips for Filbert on Floravia.
Corylus maxima, commonly known as Filbert or Giant Filbert, is a vigorous large shrub or small tree, valued for its attractive large leaves and edible fruit, the hazelnut. Its elegant habit and dense foliage make it an ideal specimen plant for spacious gardens or as part of a landscape hedge. In autumn, its leaves turn golden yellow, adding seasonal interest.
Southeast Europe and Asia Minor
It prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and good fruit production. It requires well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic to neutral soil, avoiding waterlogging which can rot the roots. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in its early years, and avoid excessive pruning to prevent compromising flowering and fruiting. A common mistake is planting it in very heavy and poorly drained soils.
