It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Water regularly, especially during dry spells and in its early years, avoiding waterlogging. A common mistake is planting it in alkaline or heavy soils, which can lead to chlorosis and poor growth. Protect the roots with a good layer of mulch.
