About Japanese barberry
Berberis thunbergii, commonly known as Japanese barberry, is a medium-sized deciduous shrub renowned for its vibrant foliage ranging from green to burgundy and its spectacular autumn colors. Its thorny branches and compact form make it ideal for hedges, borders, or as a standalone specimen in gardens and parks. It adds a splash of color and texture for much of the year.

Care tips
It prefers full sun to develop its best coloration, although it tolerates partial shade. Watering should be regular during establishment, but once mature, it is quite drought-tolerant, watering only when the soil feels dry to the touch. It adapts to a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained, avoiding waterlogging. A common mistake is planting it in deep shade, which drastically reduces the intensity of its autumn coloration.
