Pentapetes phoenicea, also known as Wu Shi Hua or Scarlet Mallow, is a tropical shrub from the Malvaceae family, valued for its vibrant scarlet-red flowers that bloom at dusk and last until the following morning. Its delicate, star-like flowers beautifully contrast with its bright green foliage, making it ideal for tropical gardens, as an ornamental in large pots, or in borders and beds where its ephemeral yet spectacular blooming can be appreciated daily.
Tropical and subtropical Asia
It requires full sun for abundant flowering, although it tolerates partial shade in very hot climates. Watering should be regular, keeping the substrate moist but not waterlogged, especially during its blooming period; reduce watering slightly in winter. It prefers rich, well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils. A common mistake is not providing enough ambient humidity or adequate drainage, which can lead to root rot or bud drop.
