About Star anise
Illicium verum, commonly known as Star Anise, is an evergreen tree native to southwestern China and northeastern Vietnam, valued for its star-shaped fruits which are a culinary and medicinal spice. It features leathery, glossy leaves and yellow or reddish flowers, which give way to these distinctive eight-carpelled fruits. It makes an excellent specimen for botanical gardens or as an ornamental tree in warm climates, where its dense foliage and aromatic fruits can be appreciated.

Illicium verum is native to Southeast Asia, specifically southern China and northern Vietnam.
Care tips
This tree prefers full sun to partial shade, with moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, ideally slightly acidic. It requires regular watering to keep the substrate consistently moist, especially in dry climates, but avoid waterlogging. Protect from severe frosts and strong winds, as it is sensitive to low temperatures. A common mistake is planting it in heavy, poorly drained soils, which can lead to root rot.
