About Hedgehog agave
Agave stricta, also known as Hedgehog Agave, is a perennial succulent forming dense, globular rosettes of slender, cylindrical, rigid, bright green leaves. Its compact form and spiky foliage make it ideal for rock gardens, container planting, or as an accent plant in desert and xeriscape landscapes. Over time, it can produce a spectacular tall flower stalk with yellow blooms.
Native range
Mexico, specifically in the states of Oaxaca and Puebla.
Care tips
It requires full sun to maintain its compact shape and vibrant color; partial shade can cause its leaves to stretch. Watering should be sparse, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially in winter to prevent rot. Use a very well-draining substrate, specifically for cacti and succulents. A common mistake is overwatering, which is the leading cause of death for this species.
