About Colchicum montanum
Colchicum montanum, also known as Mountain Saffron, is a small bulbous plant that blooms in autumn, often before its leaves appear. Its delicate pinkish-lilac or white flowers emerge directly from the ground, creating a charming display in rock gardens, alpine meadows, or along mountain paths.
Native range
Southwestern Europe (mainly the Iberian Peninsula and the Pyrenees) and northwestern Africa.
Care tips
It requires full sun exposure or light partial shade in very hot climates. The ideal substrate is well-drained, sandy or stony, as it is sensitive to waterlogging, especially during its summer dormancy. Water moderately during flowering and leaf growth in autumn and winter, and keep dry in summer. A common mistake is planting it in heavy, wet soils, which can lead to bulb rot.
