Cyperus alternifolius, commonly known as umbrella sedge or umbrella plant, is an aquatic or wetland plant featuring upright stems topped with leaves arranged like an umbrella. It's perfect for ponds, stream banks, or as an indoor plant in pots with a perpetually full saucer of water, adding an exotic and fresh touch. This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions, though it prefers plenty of light. It requires consistent and abundant watering; ideally, its roots should be submerged in water or the substrate kept constantly soaked. Use an organic-rich, well-draining substrate if not submerged. The most common mistake is allowing the substrate to dry out, which can be fatal for the plant.
